Who is the REAL Charles “Twig” Rollins?

Questions abound about Summerfield town manager Charles “Twig” Rollins and continue to roil the small North Carolina community.

Today, we are going to examine his work history which seems to be spotty and shrouded in secrecy.

But first, let’s recap yesterday where we examined the results of an online background check appearing to be that of Rollins. The anonymous report for a Charles G. Rollins listed the same phone number the town manager has publicly listed.

The document showed that Rollins had numerous evictions, judgments, and liens levied against him by North Carolina courts and the Department of Revenue. In fact, there was more than $60,000 in delinquent state taxes and judgments.

Twig — the Twitter Chef?

We stumbled upon an old Twitter/X account @ChefTwig that appears to belong to Rollins.

I asked one of my sources to verify the authenticity of the account and this person confirmed to me that Rollins does fancy himself a wizard in the kitchen. They were positive that this was his actual account.

Twig — the MLM Insurance Salesman?

When you read the publicly available articles about Rollins it is very difficult to ascertain his recent work history. There are claims he has spent 18+ years working in local government leadership positions.

But the bulk of that time seems to be from when he was working as a detention officer and sheriff deputy way back in the late 80’s and early 90’s.

What has he been up to lately?

According to his posts on Twitter, it looks like he was dabbling in insurance sales back in 2012. He has posts with pictures tagged #NAAPC2012retreat — an apparent reference to an MLM style insurance operation called National Agents Alliance.

It is unclear when he started up this hustle — but it does not appear that he had been at it long.

Twig — the Mattress Salesman?

Based on what appears to be a history of stiffing creditors and getting evicted, it does not seem like Twig has been very successful in any venture for too long.

Prior to selling insurance, Twig was apparently trying to sell adjustable beds and mattresses.

I am not sure if he was selling these on Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, or out the back of his truck on the side of the road. It does appear he was practically giving them away based on this Tweet which may explain why he was not making any money.

Twig’s LinkedIn Page Oddities

Am I the only one that finds it utterly bizarre that someone would misspell their own name on their LinkedIn profile?

Or that they would misspell the name of the county they worked for, too?

Regardless, the job history for this 60-year old man only goes back to September 2020.

Um — what happened from age 18 to 55 — besides dabbling in mattress and insurance sales?

This was the most qualified candidate that the Summerfield town council could find to replace Scott Whitaker, a credentialed town manager who served the community for 12 years alone?

The only thing Rollins appears able to do consistently for 12 years is to dodge his North Carolina tax bill (see below).

Release the Resume & Cover Letter

What was on this guy’s resume when he applied for the job?

In a Northwest Observer article, Rollins boasted about being “extremely transparent.”

Isn’t it time that he and the Summerfield governing body start answering some direct questions about his work history and whether he is a deadbeat who stiffs small businesses and dodges his tax payments?

Isn’t it time that Rollins “open his door” and release his resume and cover letter in the name of extreme transparency?

For what it is worth, a source informed me that Rollins was told by the town council that he had to clear up his tax delinquencies as a condition of employment. I cannot corroborate this statement, but the public record seems to do all the talking.

How else do you explain the fact that a tax debt from 2013 gets mysteriously cleared up and paid just three days after he started working on October 13th?

What’s in a Nickname?

But it gets even more bizarre.

In the Northwest Observer article linked above, Rollins states that he earned the “Twig” nickname from some friends he used to play basketball with as a youth. From the article:

I went to Laney High School in Wilmington and was actually in some classes with Michael Jordan. I didn’t play with him on the school team, but I did play recreational basketball.

I’m still 5’9” inches tall and weigh 165 pounds. Back then, one of my friends thought it would be cute to name me “Twig” because I shared the last name with the NBA center “Tree” Rollins and I was so much smaller than he was.

When I first read this story a couple weeks ago, I didn’t think much of it.

But the online background check document that was sent to me seems to suggest that Rollins father also went by the nickname of “Twig.”

Why would you lie about that? It seems like he just wanted to namedrop Michael Jordan’s name to me.

So odd. So many questions.

The Northwest Observer article also states that Councilman Heath Clay suggested Rollins was one of about fifteen “credible candidates” for the Summerfield vacancy.

Apparently, the best Summerfield could do was hire someone who fell for an MLM insurance pitch and sold mattresses. I mean — what the hell did the resumes of the other 14 candidates look like?

It is time for Rollins and the Summerfield town council to start answering questions about Rollins work history, financial dealings, if they conducted a background check before they hired him, and why they chose him over 14 other candidates.
