Consumer Watchdog Investigated Twig Rollins Over “Bait & Switch” Mattress Scheme

“I knew that what he was doing was not a legitimate way of doing business, and the more I thought about it, the more I thought that this needs to come to light.”

– Dusty Wilkins to WWAY3 Troubleshooters about Twig Rollins

The more I dig into the background of Summerfield town manager Charles “Twig” Rollins — the more alarmed I become. It just keeps getting worse.

Rollins’ shady mattress sales tactics were the focus of an investigation by a Wilmington news station’s consumer watchdog team.

I am not making this up and literally laughing out loud at the absurdity of this situation while typing.

YES — you read that right.

If you are new to the story — I broke the news yesterday that Rollins was selling adjustable beds and mattresses and peddling an MLM insurance scam a few years back. And the day before that I shared information purporting to show that he had been evicted multiple times and stiffed small businesses and the State of North Carolina out of more than $60,000.

I can’t stop laughing while typing this.

Can you believe the Summerfield town council hired this guy to be their town manager?

The WWAY3 Troubleshooters were tipped off to a classic bait and switch scheme that was often used by car dealers back in the day.

Rollins would advertise mattresses at super cheap “too good to be true” prices and then when customers would show up he would claim that those mattresses were all sold out and offer up more expensive ones.

According to Dusty Wilkins, she saw a handwritten sign advertising a queen size mattress for just $200. When she showed up to buy Rollins tried to swindle her by getting her to buy a $500 queen size mattress.

Way to keep it classy, Charles.

This article is dated December 2008 and he was posting about his great deals on mattresses on Twitter back in September 2009.

I wanted to dig a little further so I looked up Ms. Wilkins to see if I could find any social media posts or stories related to this matter.

Unfortunately, I could only find an obituary for a Patricia “Dusty” Wilkins of Wilmington. The obituary says that she was a “four times cancer survivor, until her death.”

I don’t know many women are named “Dusty Wilkins” in the Wilmington area, so maybe Twig was trying to scam some other person and not a woman battling cancer. But it sure seems like the same Dusty.

If Dusty is looking down I am sure she is smiling knowing that she helped shine a light on this shyster.

Release the Resume

It is time for the Summerfield town council to release the resume Classy Charles submitted in his application for this position.

Was swindlin’ women with cancer one of the bullet points under a heading touting his small business acumen?

Enquiring minds want to know!

As a member of the International City/County Management Association and the North Carolina City & County Management Association, he would have also been required to submit a resume as part of his application.

Do they match what he provided to the governing body?

Was a Background Check Done?

It is time for the Summerfield town council to be transparent and disclose whether or not they conducted a background check and confirm whether he is the same Charles Rollins that cheated landlords, small business owners, and the state out of more than $60,000 over the last twenty years.

If I were a betting man — I suspect that the “Council 4” knew the dirty details and hid them from Mayor Tim Sessoms and Councilman John Doggett.

The council selected this unethical individual — identifying him as the most qualified out of a field of 15 candidates — to be the town manager with oversight of millions of dollars. I am hearing that Councilman Heath Clay was running point on the recruitment of Classy Charles.

Beth Wood, the disgraced criminal that Rollins hired to conduct the sham investigation into Scott Whitaker and the former employees, vouched for Rollins at the January 14th meeting. According to Wood, Rollins is a financial savant.

A little over a year ago, Wood pled guilty to multiple misdemeanors after getting drunk…um…err…allegedly…and wrecking her state issued vehicle and fleeing the scene. She appears sober here — but must be smoking something if she thinks Rollins is a great manager and financially savvy.

I wouldn’t trust this guy with my wallet or Beth Wood to park my car.

Here’s Your Sign!

Comedian Bill Engvall has some famous bits about stupid people and needing to give them a sign.

This Summerfield council sure missed a lot of them with this hire!

But I thought it would be nice to end this post on a humorous note.

You see — in this article — Ms. Wilkins almost got ensnared by Rollins’ trap because she called a number on one of his illegal bandit signs.

Who knew that a few years later, Rollins would go legit after busting out trying hustle people on mattresses and MLM insurance.

He would go on to become a code enforcement officer for Wallace, North Carolina according to his LinkedIn page where he misspelled his name. I wonder if he ever took down those illegal bandit signs.

You. Cannot. Make. This. Stuff. Up.

As the world turns in the Summerfield soap opera…
